Origin and history

The chapel Saint-Hervé du Ménez-Bré, located in Pédernec, Brittany, is an emblematic monument perched at 302 meters above sea level on the remains of the Arrée Mountains. Its foundations, dating from the sixth century, were rebuilt in the sixteenth, seventeenth and nineteenth centuries by the lords of Cleuziou. It honours Saint Hervé, a legendary figure born blind and endowed with supernatural powers, associated with a nearby fountain from which it would have caused water to flow.

According to tradition, the chapel was the scene of miracles, attracting pilgrims and exorcists like Fr.Placide Guillermic (1788–73), nicknamed Tadig Kozh. The latter practiced complex rituals, including 29 Masses to free the souls of the deceased, including one celebrated at midnight, barefoot. A papal bubble of 1458 gave indulgences to the chapel, reinforcing its sacred aura and its link with Breton legends, like that of the seven bishops cursed the tyrant Conomor.

The Menez Bré, whose name evokes in Breton a "mountain of power" or magic, was also a gathering place for seasonal fairs (Bré fairs), attracting peasants and merchants twice a year. In the 19th century, the nave was restored, while the porch and bell tower, typical of the 17th century, were preserved. The site, classified as Historic Monument in 1962, remains a cultural symbol, hosting today festivals like Toulao or the Fête du Cheval.

Architecturally, the chapel is distinguished by its first floor porch with circular staircase and its steeple with abrased consoles, characteristic of the seventeenth century. The frames of the openings, of carved stone, mix trilobed arches and accolades, reflecting a neat craft. The orientation table at the summit offers an exceptional panorama, from the d-Arrée mountains to the pink granite coast, highlighting its role as a geographical and spiritual landmark in Trégor.

The lords of the Cleuziou, founders of the chapel, and Abbé Caris (died 1864), nicknamed the Bard of the Menez Bré, illustrate the anchoring of the site in local history. Legends, such as the resurrection of Triphine by Saint Hervé, or the exorcisms of Guillermic, perpetuate a memory both religious and folkloric, typical of deep Brittany.
