Origin and history
The Saint Martin de Briançonnet Chapel is a religious monument located at the entrance to the village of Briançonnet, in the Alpes-Maritimes department. Its origin dates back to the twelfth century, where a priory of the same name already existed. A lintel embedded in a village house would probably come from this medieval priory, attesting to its seniority.
The present chapel, rebuilt in the 14th century, is distinguished by its atypical bell tower-wall. Nearby, excavations revealed tombs covered with tegulae, typical of medieval burials. A carved wooden statue depicting the Assumption is preserved there, adding to its heritage interest.
The site was listed as historic monuments on December 12, 1936, recognizing its historical and architectural value. The chapel now belongs to the municipality of Briançonnet and remains a testimony of local religious and funeral practices between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
