Origin and history

The Romanesque Chapel of St.Martin of Caderousse was built in the second half of the 12th century at the site of an ancient temple dedicated to Jupiter. It constituted the first parish church of Caderousse and was dependent on Cluny Abbey at the end of the 11th century, as evidenced by a charter of the Clunisian cartular. This place of worship marked the original core of the village, before the floods of the Rhone imposed its displacement. The chapel, located 300 metres north of the present centre, preserves a Romanesque door framed with Corinthian capital columns.

In the 15th century, major restorations were undertaken, including the vault of the Saint John chapel and the cover of the nave. In the 18th century, part of the building was demolished to expand the adjacent cemetery, of which it now forms the northwest corner. These changes reflect its adaptation to local needs, between worship and funeral use.

Since 27 July 1932, the chapel has been part of the historical monuments, illustrating the Clunisian heritage in Provence and the architectural transformations linked to the history of the village. Its location, at the intersection of St. Martin's Road and North African Veterans' Avenue, as well as its proximity to the cemetery, underline its central role in the collective memory of Caderousse.
