Origin and history

The chapel Saint-Martin is a religious building located in the hamlet of Arcenay, in the commune of Lacour-d'Arcenay, Côte-d'Or. This monument, inscribed entirely by decree of 29 May 2020, is located on cadastral plot No.160, section E. Its official address, according to the Mérimée base, is 1 Place de la Chapelle, in this Burgundy village.

Rural chapels like Arcenay played a central role in the lives of local communities over the centuries. They served as a place of prayer, a gathering for religious holidays, and sometimes as a geographical or social landmark in often isolated areas. In Burgundy, a region marked by a strong Christian tradition and an ancient rural organization, these buildings also reflected the importance of faith in the daily lives of the inhabitants, between agriculture, crafts and collective life.

Their preservation today bears witness to this spiritual and architectural heritage.
