Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Martin-des-Noyers, known as Chapel des Noyers, is located near the place called Les Noyers, on the former commune of Martigné-Briand, now integrated in Terranjou (Maine-et-Loire). According to local legend, Martin de Tours, evangelizer of the region in the fourth century, would have caused a spring to spring in this place after his horse, blinded by lightning, had stumbled climbing the hillside. This source, still visible, now feeds the Layon River. Oral tradition thus associated the site with a miracle, justifying later the construction of a place of worship.
The present chapel was built in the sixteenth century, without the archives specifying the identity of its sponsors or the exact circumstances of its foundation. The building, of modest dimensions, is typical of the Renaissance Angevin rural chapels, often linked to springs or fountains known to heal or protect. The well and the water conduit from the source are an integral part of the whole, testifying to its use both religious and practical for the locals.
Classified as historical monuments since 16 September 2019, the chapel is fully protected, including the well, the spring conduit and the soil of the corresponding plot. This late registration underscores the desire to preserve an architectural, legendary and hydrological heritage. The site is now owned by the municipality of Terranjou. A statuette of Saint Martin, formerly present in the chapel, is preserved at the Notre-Dame-de-Compassion monastery in La Barre, attesting to the movements of cultural objects over the centuries.
The chapel is also associated with the castle of the Noyers, mentioned as a related historical monument, although the available sources do not detail the exact nature of this link (geographical proximity, feudal dependence, or sharing of common history). The official address listed in the Mérimée base would be located at 577 Route des Grouas, in the territory of Terranjou.
