Origin and history
The Saint-Maurice Chapel, located in Beaumont-en-Verdunois, is a religious building built in the first half of the 20th century. Oriented, it consists of a narrow porch, a nave and a circular choir with walk-in. Its architecture is distinguished by mineral facades, a concrete roof and sober lines inspired by the Art Deco style. The inclination of the roof, surmounted by a cross, creates a visual ascent effect.
At the end of the First World War, Beaumont-en-Verdunois was declared "dead for France" among eight other communes of the Meuse, located in the red zone of the battlefield of Verdun. These villages, destroyed by the fighting, were not rebuilt, but kept their administrative existence as a memorial. Between 1930 and 1934, nine commemorative chapels were built to perpetuate their memory, financed by the titles of war damage.
The Saint-Maurice chapel, designed by architect Georges Perceval, symbolizes the memory of the victims and of this village. It has been classified as a Historic Monument since 15 December 2021, including the ground of the plot, excluding the monument to the dead. Owned by the commune, it is located on the farm road of Haumont-near Samogneux, in the department of Meuse.
