Origin and history

La Chapelle Saint-Michel de Clans is a Catholic chapel located in the village of Clans, in the Alpes-Maritimes department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Built in the 16th century, it is located at the entrance of the village and would have been erected to protect the inhabitants from the plague. Her interior frescoes, made in 1513, are signed by the painter Andréa de Cella, on the order of the prior of Roubion, Erige Lubonis.

The building, with a rectangular flat bedside plan, is built in rubble and covered with round tiles. It houses remarkable murals, including representations of protective saints such as Saint-Roch and Saint-Sebastien, invoked against epidemics. These artistic and architectural elements reflect its spiritual and protective role in the local community.

The chapel, classified as historical monuments on 3 January 2000, is now owned by the municipality of Clans. Its state of conservation and its stylistic characteristics make it an important testimony of religious art and the health history of the region in the sixteenth century.

The chapel is located at the eastern exit of the village, on the way to Sainte-Anne, and its modest but symbolic architecture illustrates the practices of collective devotion to the epidemic crises of the time. The images of the patron saints, associated with Saint Michael, highlight this vocation of spiritual and physical refuge for the inhabitants.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum descriptions, confirm its heritage and artistic importance. The frescoes of Andréa de Cella, in particular, are a notable example of the Niçois religious painting of the Renaissance, marked by local and Italian influences.
