Chapel of the castle (old) or chapel Saint-Nicolas: inscription by decree of 19 July 1925
Origin and history
The Chapel Saint-Nicolas d'Argentan is an ancient castral chapel built in the 14th century, more precisely in 1373. It is located in the heart of the commune of Argentan, in the department of Orne, Normandy. This Catholic religious monument was severely damaged in 1944, along with the castle with which it was associated. Despite these destructions, it was preserved and reassigned to accommodate the Local Tourism Office.
The chapel was listed as historic monuments by an order of 19 July 1925, recognizing its heritage value. It is located in the centre of the city at 6 Rue des Veterans, and today belongs to the commune of Argentan. Its architecture and history reflect its initial role as a place of worship linked to the castle, before becoming a space dedicated to welcoming visitors and promoting the territory.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its importance in the religious and architectural heritage of the region. The chapel is also referenced in specialized bases such as Mérimée and Structurae, reflecting its historical and cultural interest. Its current state and precise location are documented, with accuracy considered satisfactory by contributors.
