Origin and history

The chapel Saint-Philibert de Plonéour-Lanvern, located in Finistère in Brittany, has its origins between the 14th and 15th centuries. The present building retains distinct architectural elements: the pillars of columns, dated the 14th century, and the 15th century piles. These details reveal a progressive construction, marked by additions and transformations over time. Outside, an ossuary and a fountain of devotion are integrated into the southern wall, testimonies of local religious and funeral practices.

The chapel rises on the site of a former priory of Landevennec, founded in the early 11th century, highlighting its historical and spiritual importance in the region. The choir, rebuilt in the 15th century, and the nave, added in the 16th century, illustrate this architectural evolution. In 1675, the bell tower arrow was destroyed during the reign of Louis XIV, permanently changing the silhouette of the building. A north porch was erected in 1747, while engraved inscriptions such as "GUIDO M 1658 RESTAURATOR" or "V.M. BIHAN RECTEUR. 1771" attest to restorations and the involvement of local figures in his interview.

Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 4 February 1926, the chapel embodies a major religious and architectural heritage. Its ossuary and fountain, embedded in the walls, recall the traditions of devotion and commemoration of the dead, typical of medieval and modern Breton communities. These elements, combined with the proximity of protohistoric steles, strengthen its anchor in a territory marked by cultural and spiritual continuity for more than a millennium.
