Origin and history
The chapel Saint-Pierre d'Ercé, located at the entrance of the village of Ercé in Ariège (Occitanie), is a Catholic religious building dating back to the 11th century, although its main construction dates back to the 12th century. It is distinguished by its sober architecture: a rectangular nave with flat bedside, surmounted by a bell tower to an arcade to the west. The Romanesque portal, adorned on its right with a bas-relief depicting St Peter in a rare posture, is his most remarkable element. Near departmental road 32 and the Garbet, its location almost cost it its destruction in the 1970s when the equipment management proposed to shave it for safety reasons. The municipality strongly opposed it, allowing its preservation.
The chapel was included in the inventory of historical monuments on 19 March 1979, recognizing its heritage value. Its interior houses a master altar, a monumental altarpiece and an 18th century carved wooden tabernacle, classified as historical monuments since 1984, alongside a painting by St Peter. In October 1996, a bell called "Simone" was installed there, in tribute to Simone Henry, historian and president of the Association of Friends of Saint-Lizier and Couserans, which financed his acquisition. This furniture and architectural elements illustrate the evolution of the chapel from a medieval place of worship to a protected heritage.
The St. Peter's Chapel of Ercé is part of a rich local religious landscape, like the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption of Ercé (registered in 1964). Its Romanesque bas-relief and its turbulent history — between threat of destruction and safeguard — make it a symbol of the preservation of the Ariegian rural heritage. Today owned by the municipality, it remains a witness to religious and artistic practices from the Middle Ages to the modern era in the Couserans.
