Origin and history
The Saint-Sauveur Chapel, located on the heights of Tende in the Alpes-Maritimes, is a modest late Romanesque building built in the early 14th century. It consists of a rectangular nave arched in cradle and an apse in cul-de-four, all covered with lauzes. Although its architecture still belongs to the novel, its dating clearly indicates its place in the 14th century, marking a gradual stylistic transition in the region.
In 1982, restoration works revealed a wall-painted decoration, hidden under batigeons, and originally covering the entire interior of the chapel. These frescoes, very fragmentary but contemporary of the building, offer a rare testimony of the religious pictorial art of this period. Their discovery motivated a safeguard campaign between 1988 and 1989, thus avoiding the ruin of the monument.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 26 May 2000, the chapel now belongs to the municipality of Tende. Its state of conservation, although improved, remains fragile, especially for murals, only part of which remains. These elements make it a remarkable heritage of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, illustrating both medieval religious architecture and the challenges of its preservation.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its local importance and its role in the artistic history of the Alpes-Maritimes. The chapel, though discreet, embodies a cultural and spiritual heritage linked to medieval community life in this border area of the Southern Alps.
