Origin and history

The chapel Saint-Sauveur de Draguignan is an ancient castral chapel built between the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century. It was integrated into a castle belonging to the hospital knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, a religious and military order active in the region. This monument illustrates medieval religious architecture linked to hospital orders, with a vocation both spiritual and defensive.

Over the centuries, the chapel has lost its initial religious function to serve as a meeting place or a repository of explosives, reflecting changes in the use of historic buildings. The site was classified by decree of 30 July 1937 for its heritage value, and the chapel itself was listed as historical monuments on 29 April 1993. Since July 2019, it has hosted the ORGAnuGAMMusEum, a collection of works by artist Danielle Jacqui, marking a contemporary cultural reappropriation.

Architecturally, the chapel is part of the urban landscape of Draguignan, with a precise location at the rise of the Clock or near the Rue de la Roque. Its communal property and its opening to the public (visits, exhibitions) make it a living place of local heritage. Available sources, such as Monumentum and Wikipedia, highlight its historical importance and preservation, while noting a geographical location to be refined (estimated at 5/10).
