Origin and history

The chapel Saint-Sébastien, located in Saint-Thome in the department of Ardèche, is a religious building built in the 4th quarter of the 13th century and in the 1st quarter of the 14th century. It bears witness to the late medieval architecture of the region, with traces of subsequent changes related to its community use. Its designation as historic monuments in 1974 underscores its heritage value, although its exact history remains partially documented.

According to sources such as the Charta vetus, the chapel would have a much older origin, dating back to a foundation in the sixth century by a certain Yteria. A probable reconstruction in the 12th century is mentioned, but the material evidence focuses on the late medieval period. In the 19th century, the building was transformed into a school in 1835, resulting in structural changes such as the elevation of the drip walls in 1836. Disused at the end of the same century, it retains a Latin inscription in re-use, vestige of its past.

The chapel, owned by the commune of Saint-Thome, is today a testimony to the functional evolution of religious buildings in rural areas. Its classification as a historical monument in 1974 (decree of 28 June) protects its architectural elements, including its cadastre identified under the reference AE 195. Available sources, such as Monumentum or Mérimée, confirm its anchoring in the ardéchois heritage, although some details of its history remain to be specified.

Its approximate address, 4 La Placette, 07220 Saint-Thome, and its Insee code (07300) place it precisely in the administrative landscape of the Ardèche, region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The accuracy of its geographic location is, however, estimated to be poor (note 5/10), perhaps reflecting uncertainties about its exact location or geographic boundaries.
