Origin and history

The chapel Saint-Taurin de La Ferté-Imbault is a vestige of the old collegiate of the city, partially destroyed by a fire in the 16th century. The present gate, the only remaining element of the early church, dates from 1164 and was commanded by Hervé I, Count of Vierzon. This portal bears witness to the Romanesque architecture of the original building, before its destruction.

In the 17th century, the seigneurial chapel was rebuilt for Jacques d'Etampes, the local lord who died in 1668. This monument, classified in 1875, represents one of the rare remains of the medieval religious ensemble. It illustrates the transition from medieval to classical architecture, while preserving Gothic and Romanesque elements.

Today, the chapel Saint-Taurin is owned by the commune of La Ferté-Imbault. Its ranking among the Historical Monuments underlines its heritage importance, both for its history and for its architecture. The site, although partially preserved, offers an overview of the religious and seigneurial evolution of the region Centre-Val de Loire.
