Origin and history

The Sainte-Barbe Chapel is a small rectangular building located in Plestin-les-Grèves, in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany. It is characterized by a chapel adjacent to the north of the choir, a porch to the south, and a bell tower bearing the date of 1609. Inside, it houses a beam of glory as well as polychrome statues of Saint Barbe, Saint Apolline, Saint Roch, Saint Louis, Saint Mark and Christ in contempt, all blessed on December 4, 1698. These artistic and architectural elements testify to its local religious and cultural importance.

During the French Revolution, the chapel, then owned by Morlaix Hospital, was sold as a national property on 10 April 1794 to François Louis du Cosquer de Kergariou. This change of ownership reflects the political and social upheavals of the time, where many ecclesiastical goods were confiscated and redistributed. The chapel was later listed as historic monuments by order of 9 October 1934, thus recognizing its heritage value.

Today, the Sainte-Barbe chapel remains an architectural and historical testimony of the Breton region. Its inscription as a historical monument in 1934 allowed its preservation, offering visitors an overview of religious art and local history of the 17th and 18th centuries. It also embodies the central role of chapels in the community and spiritual life of Brittany throughout the centuries.
