Origin and history

The chapel Sainte-Croix de Brée is a religious building located in the municipality of Brée, Mayenne (Land of the Loire). Built in the second half of the 16th century, it is distinguished by its modest but architecturally remarkable character, despite subsequent changes. It was surrounded by one of the two cemeteries of the parish, distinct from the main church, and served as a place of devotion and processions for the inhabitants.

According to the sources, this chapel was not a canonically founded chapel, but an ancient sanctuary where two masses were celebrated every week. In 1575 it was built at the initiative of the parish priest, Guy Guéault, in the great cemetery. Its importance to the local community was recognized in 1721, when the Bishop of Mans lifted a temporary ban on its use, allowing the resumption of processions and offices.

St. Croix Chapel was listed as a historical monument in 1996 for its heritage interest. Its history reflects its central role in the religious and social life of Brée, especially as a place of gathering and devotion. The documents also mention a wooden fence surrounding the sanctuary, highlighting its particular status within the parish.

Sources differ on its exact date of construction: some historians, such as Abbé Angot, estimate it from the 13th or 14th century, while historical monuments and other references clearly place it in 1575. This disparity illustrates the uncertainties surrounding its origin, although its inscription in the 16th century is now retained as an official reference.
