Origin and history

The Sainte-Croix de Poitiers Chapel is a 10th-century religious monument in the town of Poitiers, New Aquitaine. It represents an architectural vestige of the medieval period, marked by an inscription as the Historical Monuments in 1973. The protected elements specifically concern the remains of the old chapel, located at 10-14 rue Jean-Jaurès.

In medieval times, chapels played a central role in the religious and social life of urban communities. Poitiers, a strategic city since ancient times, was a cultural and political crossroads in Poitou. Religious buildings such as the Sainte-Croix Chapel served as places of worship, but also as identity landmarks for the inhabitants. Their preservation today offers an overview of the spatial and spiritual organization of cities in the 10th century.

The chapel is now run by an association, suggesting a desire for heritage valorization. Although its present state is only partially documented (location considered satisfactory a priori), its registration in 1973 underlines its historical importance. Available sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm its anchoring in the Poitevin urban landscape, between collective memory and conservation issues.
