Origin and history
Sainte-Hiltrude Chapel is a chapel located in Liessies, in the Nord department, in the Hauts-de-France region. Ranked a historic monument on August 26, 1947, this religious building is distinguished by its open structure, which does not allow for its shelter. It is located at the top of a terter, at the intersection of two ways, a typical arrangement of the oratories aimed at highlighting the devotion of its sponsors.
The building rests on a base of terracotta bricks, topped by a finely worked blue stone masonry. It is part of a set of four almost identical oratories, erected in 1739 and 1740 at the request of the Abbey of Liessies. These buildings reflect the religious and architectural influence of the abbey on the commune at that time.
Although small, the chapel of Sainte-Hiltrude illustrates the local Christian heritage and the 18th century regional crafts. Its classification among historical monuments underlines its cultural importance and its remarkable state of conservation, despite its purely symbolic and devotional vocation.
