Origin and history

The Sainte-Tréphine Chapel is a religious building located at Sainte-Tréphine in the commune of Pontivy (Morbihan, Brittany). According to tradition, it commemorates the martyrdom of Saint Tréphine, killed at the entrance to Vannes, at Bondon, where a cross decorated with a hammer and an axe marks the location of his death. This small rectangular building is distinguished by its arched arch, painted in 1701, which covers an area of 11,50 meters long by 8,25 meters wide.

The decoration of the vault represents, in eight medallions, the striking episodes of the life of Saint Tréphine. These paintings are part of a typical 17th century ornamental setting, including steles, antelots, acanthe leaves and fruit motifs. The apparent entrances of the frame, painted in the tempera, as well as the sculptures of the last entrance (dated from 1623) testify to the artistic richness of the building. The chapel was listed as a historic monument on November 27, 1968.

The chapel belongs to the commune of Pontivy and is a remarkable example of Breton religious art from the 17th and 18th centuries. His iconography, centered on the martyrdom of Saint Tréphine, reflects local beliefs and the importance of the worship of saints in Brittany at that time. The techniques used, as tempera on wood, illustrate the artisanal know-how of the period.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight the heritage value of this site, both for its architecture and its interior decorations. The location of the chapel, although noted as approximate (level 6/10), is specified at the address 2 Rue du Hent Bihan, confirming its anchoring in the historical landscape of Pontivy.
