Origin and history

Santu Petru di Nesce Chapel, located in Nessa, Corsica, has architectural features suggesting an origin dating back to the ninth century. The primitive masonry apparatus, composed of rubble bound by lime mortar, as well as the remains of the semicircular apse arched in cul-de-four, testify to this ancient period. Today, only the corners and the base of the southern and northern elevations of the original Romanesque building remain.

In the 15th century, the chapel was enriched with a fresco adorning the cul-de-four de l'Abside, representing a Virgin with the Child surrounded by veiled and kneeling women, probably donors from a female brotherhood. This fresco, along with the presence of Saint Peter holding a key and a book, indicates that the church was home to a brotherhood of women, emphasizing its community and spiritual role at that time.

The building, partially modified over the centuries, preserves traces of its evolution, such as the central window of the obstructed abside, probably during the execution of the paintings. Classified as a Historical Monument in 1990, the chapel now belongs to the municipality of Nessa and is located in the enclosure of a cemetery, still accessible to the public.
