Origin and history
The charcuterie du Panthéon, located at 200 rue Saint-Jacques in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, is a remarkable example of early 20th century commercial craftsmanship. Its decor, made between 1914 and 1920, reflects the aesthetics of the period, mixing carved wood, golden copper and marble elements. This type of sign, often commissioned from skilled artisans, was designed to attract a bourgeois and student clientele, numerous in this neighbourhood close to the Sorbonne.
Inside the charcuterie preserves a painted ceiling as well as marble shelves, rare elements for a food trade during this period. The front, protected by an order of 23 May 1984, is attributed to the decorator Renato Panzani, whose name remains associated with this historic monument. This type of decor is part of a Parisian tradition of beautification of shops, especially in central districts where art crafts were valued.
The location of the charcuterie, close to the Panthéon and Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, makes it a witness to the daily life of the Latin Quarter at the beginning of the 20th century. At that time, Rue Saint-Jacques was a major trading artery frequented by students, intellectuals and wealthy residents. Mouth shops, such as this charcuterie, played an important social role, serving as meeting places and a delight for an expanding urban population.
