Origin and history
The charcuterie located at 6 rue des Petits-Carreaux, in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris, is a remarkable example of the commercial architecture of the late 19th century. The building itself dates from this period, while its marble front, characteristic of Art Deco, was added between the 1930s and 1940s. This mix of styles reflects the evolution of aesthetic tastes and craft techniques over nearly half a century.
Inside, the decor is just as remarkable: two walls are covered with ceramics decorated with glycine motifs, and the background wall is completely covered with acid-engraved mirrors, a rare and delicate technique. The furniture, composed of shelves and a marble countertop, as well as the ceiling decorated with canvases depicting stylized flowers and animals, show attention to detail and a thorough aesthetic research. These elements contributed to its classification as Historic Monument by order of 23 May 1984, thus protecting the front and interior decoration.
This trade illustrates the importance of small Parisian stalls in the daily life of the early 20th century, where crafts and the mouth trade played a central role. The preservation of such decorations offers a valuable overview of the commercial practices and decorative trends of the time, while highlighting the artisanal and architectural heritage of Paris.
