Windmill of Charnailles (Box B 707): inscription by decree of 27 September 1961

Origin and history

The windmill of Charnailles is a building located in the commune of Jambles, in the department of Saône-et-Loire, in the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. This monument, typical of the constructions dedicated to milling, illustrates the importance of mills in the rural economy and local agriculture before industrialization. Its architecture and mechanism reflect traditional grain processing techniques.

The mill has been a historical monument since 27 September 1961 and bears witness to the region's industrial and artisanal heritage. Windmills, like Charnailles, played a central role in the lives of rural communities, serving as both a place of production and a gathering point. Their decline, linked to the evolution of technologies and modes of production, makes them today valuable remains of local history.
