Origin and history

The Fareyroux Chartreuse is a religious monument located in the commune of Saint-Astier in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Built in the first half of the 17th century, it illustrates the expansion of the Order of Chartreux in France at this time, although the available sources do not specify the exact circumstances of its foundation or its founders. In the seventeenth century, Chartreuses played a major spiritual and economic role in rural areas.

These monasteries, often isolated, housed monks dedicated to prayer and manual work, while actively participating in local life through agriculture, handicrafts or the reception of pilgrims. Saint-Astier, like other villages in the Périgord, was then marked by an agro-pastoral economy and a society organized around local lords and clergy.
