Origin and history

The water-pagod castle of the Hotel Lionel-Normant, located in Romorantin-Lanthenay, is a garden factory built in the park of an old mansion. This monument, built in the 4th quarter of the 19th century, reflects the enthusiasm of the industrial bourgeoisie for the Chinese, a style inspired by the stories and collections of ornaments about popular China since the end of the 18th century. Its picturesque architecture, with a cabinet decorated with paintings and murals on the second floor, makes it a unique example in the region.

The Normant family, enriched by the local drapery industry, marked the economic history of Romorantin. Lionel Normant, descendant of this dynasty, had his home built between 1875 and 1880, surrounded by a landscaped garden where the castle was built. The family factory closed in 1969, but this monument, classified in 1994, remains as evidence of the industrial golden age and exotic influences in bourgeois decorative art.

The oriental style castle contrasts with the neo-classical style of the mansion. Since 1952, the property belongs to the commune, and the monument, although protected, remains an emblematic vestige of the local heritage. Its listing in the Historical Monuments Inventory in 1994 underlines its architectural and historical importance, linked to both the textile industry and the eclectic artistic currents of the time.
