Origin and history

Chevry-en-Sereine Castle is an iconic building dating from the 1st quarter of the 17th century, built around 1633 during the reign of Louis XIII. It was erected by Charles Duret, Comptroller General of Finance and Secretary of the Order of the Holy Spirit, using noble materials such as brick and sandstone. Its architecture consists of a body of rectangular houses flanked by two pavilions of angle, surrounded by a courtyard of honor and dry moat. The park, designed by André Le Nôtre, famous landscaper, completes this majestic ensemble.

The castle is associated with notable historical figures, including the Marquis de Laubespin, descendant of Gabriel-François de Mouchet-Battefort, hero of the American Independence. This monument was preserved thanks to its classification as the Historical Monuments: the castle, its moat and its court of honour were classified on 5 July 1966, while the outbuildings, the vegetable garden and orangery were registered on 2 July 1993.

The architect Jean Thiriot is mentioned as the project manager, although little detailed information on his exact role is available. Today, the castle remains an architectural and historical testimony of the era of Louis XIII, combining classical elegance and prestigious heritage. Its exact address, 19 Rue du Bois de la Forge in Chevry-en-Sereine, Seine-et-Marne, allows it to be located precisely in the francilian heritage.
