Origin and history

The castle of the Pioline came into being in the 14th century with the construction of the mill of Verdache by the lord Rodolphe de Verdache. This mill, transformed into a sumptuous residence in the 16th century, welcomes illustrious personalities like Charles Quint during the siege of Marseilles in 1524, then Catherine de Medici. Henry III then erected the domain as a fief, marking its historical and political importance.

In the 17th century, Renaud de Piolenc, squire d'Aix and seigneur de Cornillon, acquired the estate and altered the facade, giving the castle part of its present appearance. In the following century, the Marquis de Meyronnet, after purchasing the castle at auction, undertook important works: construction of two richly decorated wings and a courtyard of honor with a central fountain. These embellishments reflect the architectural delight of the time.

After the French Revolution, the castle changed owners several times and was an abandoned time. In the 20th century, an antique dealer restored it and obtained its classification as historical monuments on 20 January 1976. Since 2016, the castle has been home to a renowned hotel-restaurant, headed by chef Pierre Reboul, combining historical heritage and gastronomy.

The Château de la Pioline is a remarkable example of architectural evolution, moving from a medieval mill to an aristocratic residence and then to a hotel establishment. Its classification in 1976 underlines its heritage value, while its protected elements, such as facades, roofs and the Louis XVI lounge, bear witness to its rich past.

Located on the road to Les Milles in Aix-en-Provence, the castle is today an emblematic place of the Bouches-du-Rhône. Its history, marked by figures like Arnaud de Borilli or Renaud de Piolenc, reflects the social and architectural transformations of Provence throughout the centuries.

Future

It is now a hotel restaurant that welcomes chef Pierre Reboul since 2016.
