Origin and history

The Château de Montivert, located in Saint-André-en-Vivarais en Ardèche, finds its origins in the 13th century in the form of a strong house with two dungeons. This first building, transformed several times, passes into the hands of noble families such as the Iserdand, the Montaignac and the Vire du Liron. In the mid-18th century, Gabrielle Vire du Liron made major changes, marking a key step in its architectural evolution.

Around 1857, the Lacroix-Laval family ordered the construction of the present castle, entrusted to architect Pierre Martin (probable attribution). The building adopts a neo-Gothic style combining medieval and renaissant references: quadrilateral flanked by schauguers, false mâchicoulis and round towers. The outbuildings (close in U, concierge) could be the work of Jean-Prosper Bissuel. The estate, registered with the Historic Monuments in 2007, also includes a closed vegetable garden, a park and a serve.

The interior of the castle reveals a preserved 19th century decor: vaulted chapel of the dogives (2nd floor) with paintings, stained glass and panelling, panelled lounges with wooden ceilings, and an honour staircase on three levels. The slate roofs and skylights complete the romantic aesthetic of the ensemble. Agricultural buildings, functional, illustrate the rural organization of the period, with a clear separation between living spaces and areas dedicated to livestock.

The Château de Montivert thus embodies the neo-medieval ideal of the Second Empire, combining historical reinterpretation and modern comfort. Its architecture, inspired by 19th-century theories of the Middle Ages, makes it a rare testimony of this current in Ardèche, far from the major urban centres like Lyon. The 2007 protection covers the entire estate, highlighting its exceptional heritage value.
