Origin and history
The castle of Azay-le-Ferron, transformed into a museum, was bequeathed to the City of Tours in 1951 by Mrs Hersent-Luzarche, with her furniture and collections. This legacy was designed to create a museum that showcases a coherent private collection, reflecting the tastes of its last owners. The castle, built between the 15th century and the first half of the 20th century, is surrounded by a landscaped park dating from the second half of the 19th century. Today it houses a variety of works, including paintings, antique furniture, art objects and cabinet-making pieces, offering a testimony of the art of living of local elites throughout the centuries.
Among the remarkable pieces are a Allegory of Peace painted in 1641 by Hendrick Martensz Sorgh, paintings attributed to Antonio Lagorio (17th century), as well as a rare set of furniture from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The museum also preserves dinanderry objects, bronze-mounted porcelain, and watchmaking pieces, illustrating eclectic collections. The castle, classified as a Historical Monument, is managed under the label Musée de France, guaranteeing the preservation of this artistic and historical heritage.
The interest of the place also lies in its evolutionary architecture, mixing medieval elements with more recent additions, and in its park, designed according to the 19th century landscape principles. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair (note 5/10), and its official address is 31-33 Hersent-Luzarche Street, in the municipality of Azay-le-Ferron (Indre, region Centre-Val de Loire).
