Windmill: inscription by decree of 27 December 1945

Origin and history

The windmill of Châtellenot, erected in 1854, replaces an earlier mill in ruins. Located on the edge of the plateau near the village, it is distinguished by its circular masonry tower of 8,30 meters high and 6 meters in diameter, with walls of 70 cm thick. Two doors and six square windows, spread over two floors separated by a wooden floor, pierce the structure. An interior stone staircase, extended by a wooden staircase on the second floor, serves the levels. Originally, four wings operated the mechanism, two of which remained in the mid-20th century.

The mechanism, acquired from the Arconcey mill, rests on a 76-ton vertical wooden wheel, with a central cast iron shaft. This tree transmitted movement to the grinding wheels via toothed wheels under the floor of the second floor. The conical roof, covered with red zinc scales, and the wing rotating shaft could rotate thanks to a solid wood lever of the roof, sliding on a crown of wood recessed at the top. The mill, still functional in 1958, was registered as a Historical Monument by order of 27 December 1945.

The location of the mill, at the approximate address 5 Rue du Moulin à Vent in Châtellenot (Côte d'Or), is estimated with fair accuracy (level 5/10). This windmill testifies to 19th-century milling techniques, combining traditional materials such as stone and wood with more modern metal elements such as cast iron shaft. Its functional architecture reflects the adaptation of the mills to the local agricultural needs of the time.
