Origin and history
The log house located on Rue du Gillard in Chavanges is a typical 16th century building, characteristic of the civil architecture of this period. This type of construction, widespread in rural villages, reflects the techniques of carpentry and materials available in the Renaissance, while illustrating the way of life of the inhabitants of the period.
Classified as a Historic Monument by order of 29 October 1928, this house embodies a preserved heritage, reflecting the importance attached to the conservation of ancient buildings in France. Its inscription in the Merimée base and its precise location in the village of Chavanges (departement of the Aube, Grand Est region) make it a point of interest for the study of traditional Champagne habitat.
In modern times, wood-paned houses were often used as housing for artisans, traders or peasants, playing a central role in community life. Their wooden structure, combined with the filling of torchi or bricks, offered an economical and sustainable solution, adapted to local resources. These buildings were also social markers, sometimes reflecting the prosperity of their owners.
