Origin and history
The building located on the 10 Grande-Rue in Chazay-d'Azergues, in the Rhône department, dates from the 15th century. This building is distinguished by a stone niche integrated with its facade, housing a statue of the Virgin. This architectural element led to its classification as Historic Monument by ministerial decree of 10 October 1927, highlighting its heritage and religious interest.
The location of the building, in the historical center of Chazay-d'Azergues, reflects the medieval town planning of this commune of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. At that time, the facades of bourgeois or artisanal houses were often decorated with religious symbols, testifying to public piety and the importance of faith in everyday life. These elements also served as visual cues in narrow, lively streets.
Today, the building remains a representative example of local civil and religious heritage. Although information on its original use or occupants is missing from available sources, its official protection makes it a preserved witness to the rhodanian vernacular architecture. The niche and its statue also illustrate Marian worship, deeply rooted in regional traditions since the Middle Ages.
