Origin and history

Darney Castle, built in the 18th century on the foundations of a medieval building destroyed in 1639, has been home to the Czechoslovak historical and military museum since 1938. This museum commemorates two major events: the stay of the Czech and Slovak legionaries at Camp Kléber during the First World War, and the official recognition of Czechoslovakia by France on 29 June 1918. The castle, a former town hall, preserves remains of the original dungeon and a room decorated with coats of arms of families of bohemian glassmakers installed in the fourteenth century.

The museum exhibits objects related to the creation of Czechoslovakia, including the original speech by President Raymond Poincaré in 1918, a painting of the flag ceremony for the legionaries, and a replica of the flag. It also houses a golden book by holders of a commemorative medal created in 1948 for veterans and families of Kléber soldiers. The castle, inscribed in the historical monuments in 1984, symbolizes the Franco-Czech links, reinforced by places such as the Masaryk Square and the Václav-Havel Square in Darney.

In 2018, a second museum dedicated to singer Damia (1889-1978) was inaugurated in the castle. He presents personal objects, posters, scores and photographs related to his artistic career. This museum complements the cultural offer of the site, which combines military history, architectural heritage and local memory.

The castle of Darney, originally built in the 10th century by the local lords, was a strategic military place for the Dukes of Lorraine before being shaved in 1639 during the Thirty Years War. Reconstructed in 1725 to house the provost, it incorporates defensive elements such as a spiral staircase in a turret. Its ramparts, associated with the "Thirty Towers City", testify to its historic importance in the region.

The city of Darney, marked by the glass industry since the 14th century thanks to the installation of nice bohemian glass men, has also played a key role in the international recognition of Czechoslovakia. The presence of the Czech and Slovak legionaries in 1918, as well as the visit of President Tomáš Masaryk in December 1918, anchored Darney in European diplomatic history.
