Origin and history
The Way of the Cross known as the Grand Voyage, located in Romans-sur-Isère, is a historical monument whose stations are spread throughout the city and associated with the Recollet cemetery. These oratories, all after the 19th century, were enriched in 1942 by plaster bas-reliefs made by the sculptor Donzelli. Their layout follows an urban route, including emblematic streets such as the Faubourg-Clérieux or Place Jules-Nadi.
Certain stations of the Way of the Cross have been the subject of separate heritage protections. Station X, located at Jules-Nadi Square, was listed in 1987, while stations I, II, III, IV, V, VIII, XV, XIX, XX and XXI were listed in 1996. These elements, both communal and private, illustrate the cultural and religious importance of this journey in the city.
The bas-reliefs of 1942, executed by Duilio Donzelli, mark a major artistic stage for this monument. Their style and material (plaster) reflect the techniques and influences of the time. The Way of the Cross, by its dispersion in urban space, also shows a desire to integrate religious devotion into the daily lives of the inhabitants of Romans-sur-Isère.
