The chimney in its entirety, including its plated area (Box ET 1155): inscription by order of 14 June 2002
Origin and history
The Grands Bois chimney is an industrial vestige emblematic of the island of Réunion, French overseas department located in the Indian Ocean. It belonged to an old sugar factory, now in ruins, and is located in the district of Grands Bois, in the commune of Saint-Pierre. This monument, characteristic of the 19th century industrial architecture, illustrates the economic importance of sugar cane cultivation in this region.
The chimney was entered in full, including its plated area, in the additional inventory of the Historic Monuments by order of 14 June 2002. This heritage protection underscores its historic and architectural value, although the plant of which it was a part is now abandoned. The chimney remains a material testimony of the sugar industry that shaped the landscape and the economy of Réunion.
The property now belongs to a private company, and its state of conservation depends on this management. Although the sources do not specify its accessibility to the public, its listing as Historic Monuments guarantees an official recognition of its importance in the industrial heritage of Réunion. It is part of a wider set of sites related to sugar production, as evidenced by references to sugar cane cultivation and other plants on the island.
