Origin and history
The La Réserve fireplace is an iconic industrial vestige of Réunion Island, a French overseas department located in the Indian Ocean. Built on the site of an old sugar factory, it is located in the La Reserve district of Sainte-Marie. Its inclusion in the additional inventory of the Historic Monuments on 27 June 2002 covers the entire structure as well as its plated grounds, highlighting its heritage importance in the Réunion landscape.
The economy of La Réunion has long been based on the cultivation of sugar cane, introduced in the seventeenth century and became a pillar of its colonial development. Sugar plants, like the one whose chimney is the last testimony, played a central role in the transformation of the cane and in the social organization of the island. These industrial infrastructures also marked the landscape, symbolizing both the economic prosperity and the often difficult working conditions of agricultural and machine workers.
The protection of the La Réserve chimney is part of a broader approach to preserving Réunion's industrial heritage. This type of monument, although less publicized than religious or civil buildings, offers valuable insight into the economic and technical history of the island. However, its state of conservation and accessibility remain issues, as evidenced by the location data considered "passable" by available sources.
