The chimney in its entirety, including its plated area (Box HR 172): inscription by order of 8 July 2002
Origin and history
The Mahavel fireplace is an iconic industrial vestige of Réunion Island, a French overseas department located in the Indian Ocean. It belonged to an old sugar factory, a symbol of the local economy historically oriented towards the cultivation and processing of sugar cane. Its impressive architecture, typical of 19th-century industrial installations, reflects the importance of this activity for the economic development of the island.
Included in the additional inventory of Historic Monuments since July 8, 2002, the chimney is fully protected, including its plated area. This heritage recognition underscores its role in the industrial history of Réunion, while preserving a material testimony of the sugar production techniques of the past. Its location in Saint-Pierre, a city marked by this industry, strengthens its anchor in the cultural and historical landscape of La Réunion.
The Mahavel chimney is part of a broader context where the sugar industry has shaped the landscapes, societies and economies of the Indian Ocean Islands. In La Réunion, this activity structured social organization around plantations and factories, attracting a diverse workforce and influencing demographic dynamics. The remains like this chimney today recall the complex legacy of this period, between technical progress and social issues.
