The chimney in its entirety, including its plated area (Box BC 511): inscription by order of 2 May 2002
Origin and history
The Quartier-Français fireplace is an iconic industrial vestige of Réunion Island, French overseas department located in the Indian Ocean. It belonged to an old sugar factory, a symbol of the economic importance of sugar cane cultivation in this region. Its impressive architecture bears witness to the flourishing industrial activity that marked local economic history.
Classified as an additional inventory of Historic Monuments since May 2, 2002, this chimney is fully protected, including its plated area. It illustrates Réunion's industrial heritage and its role in the economic development of Sainte-Suzanne. Today, it remains a material testimony of the time when the sugar industry dominated the island's economic and social landscape.
The fireplace is located in Quartier-Français, a place-dît in the commune of Sainte-Suzanne, in the northeast of La Réunion. Although owned by a private corporation, its listing as historic monuments makes it a protected heritage element. It embodies the transition from a traditional agricultural economy to growing industrialization, characteristic of the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Réunion.
