The chimney in its entirety, including its plate pitch (Box CR 483): inscription by order of 10 June 2002

Origin and history

The Tampon establishment fireplace is an iconic industrial vestige of Réunion Island, a French overseas department located in the Indian Ocean. This former sugar factory, which has now disappeared, was dedicated to the processing of sugar cane, a major economic activity of the island since the 19th century. The chimney, the only remaining structure, symbolizes the historical importance of this industry for local development.

This chimney, which has been included in the additional inventory of Historic Monuments since June 10, 2002, including its plated area, illustrates the industrial architecture associated with sugar production. Its ranking reflects the desire to preserve a heritage representative of Réunion's economic history, marked by the intensive cultivation of sugar cane. The site, located at 20 Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix Road in the Tampon, remains a material testimony of that time.

The Réunion, whose Insee code is 974, has experienced a social and economic organization strongly influenced by sugar plantations. These plants, often located near the growing areas, played a central role in the lives of local communities, structuring agricultural activities and trade. The Tampon chimney, though disused, recalls this past and its impact on the landscape and collective memory of the island.
