The chimney in its entirety, including its plate pitch (Box DC 1246): inscription by order of 16 April 2002

Origin and history

The fireplace Le Portail is an iconic industrial vestige of Réunion Island, French overseas department located in the Indian Ocean. It belonged to an old sugar factory, a symbol of the economic importance of sugar cane cultivation in this region. Its impressive architecture bears witness to the past industrial activity of Saint-Leu, a commune where it is established.

The chimney was added to the additional inventory of Historic Monuments on April 16, 2002, including its plated site. This heritage protection underscores its role in Réunion's economic history, marked by sugar production. Today, it remains a material testimony of that time, although its property now belongs to a private company.

The site is located precisely at the Portail, a place called Saint-Leu, and its official address is referenced in the Mérimée base. Despite its ranking, its access to the public or its current vocation (visit, rental, etc.) are not explicitly documented in available sources.

The island of La Réunion, where this monument is located, has had an economy largely oriented towards agriculture, including sugar cane, since the 19th century. Sugar plants, such as the one whose chimney is a vestige, played a central role in the local social and economic organization, employing a large labour force and structuring the landscapes.

The preservation of such industrial monuments makes it possible to understand the evolution of production techniques and the economic transformations of the region. Their classification as Historic Monuments contributes to the valorisation of a heritage that is often unknown but essential for the identity of Réunion.

Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a protected monument and provide details of its location and history, although some information, such as precise dates of construction or the actors involved in its construction, remains missing from the documents consulted.
