The chimney in its entirety, including its plate pitch (Box AS 873): inscription by order of 11 July 2002
Origin and history
The Monjol-Mondon fireplace is an industrial vestige emblematic of the island of La Réunion, French overseas department. Located at 18 rue de la Cheminée aux Avirons, it belonged to an old sugar factory, symbol of the local economy linked to the cultivation of sugar cane. Its impressive architecture reflects the historical importance of this industry in the region.
Classified as an additional inventory of Historic Monuments since July 11, 2002, this chimney is fully protected, including its plated area. This ranking reflects its role in the industrial heritage of Réunion and its link to the economic history of the island. The preservation of this monument preserves the memory of the sugar activities that shaped La Réunion.
Les Avirons, a town with a fireplace, is located in the southwest of the island. The region, marked by strong agricultural activity, saw the development of many industrial infrastructures in the 19th century. The Monjol-Mondon chimney thus illustrates the technological and economic evolution of La Réunion during this period.
