The chimney in its entirety, including its plate pitch (Case AR 793): inscription by order of 27 June 2002
Origin and history
The Beaufonds fireplace is an industrial vestige emblematic of Réunion Island, a French overseas department located in the Indian Ocean. It belonged to a former sugar factory, the Beaufonds factory, and is located in the commune of Saint-Benoît. Its impressive architecture recalls the economic importance of sugar production in the history of Réunion, linked to the intensive cultivation of sugar cane.
Classified as an additional inventory of Historic Monuments since June 27, 2002, this chimney benefited from a major restoration completed in September 2021. Today, its surroundings are accessible to the public as part of organized visits, especially during the discovery of the nearby distillery of Rivière du Mât. This site illustrates the link between industrial heritage and cultural tourism.
The chimney, along with its plated ground, is fully protected by a ministerial decree. It is currently owned by a private company, highlighting the contemporary challenges of preserving and valuing industrial remains. Its inscription in the heritage also reflects the recognition of La Réunion's economic history, marked by the sugar industry and its infrastructure.
The monument is part of a landscape where sugar industry has shaped local territories and societies. The proximity to other sites such as the distillery of Rivière du Mât reinforces its anchoring in a historical and tourist journey dedicated to this heritage. The Beaufonds chimney thus embodies a collective memory, between industrial heritage and current cultural dynamism.
