All three chimneys, including their plated area (Box CO 464): inscription by order of 11 July 2002
Origin and history
The chimneys of the Saint-Etienne River are the remains of a former sugar factory located on the island of La Réunion, French overseas department in the Indian Ocean. They are located on the Entre-Deux road in Saint-Pierre, and are an architectural testimony of the sugar industry that marked the economic history of the island. Their presence recalls the importance of sugarcane cultivation in local development.
These three chimneys have been fully protected, including their plated area, since being added to the additional inventory of the Historic Monuments by order of 11 July 2002. Their preservation reflects the desire to preserve an iconic industrial heritage, linked to a major economic activity in Réunion. Today, they belong to the commune of Saint-Pierre and remain a symbol of the sugar past of the island.
The site is located precisely on the Entre-Deux road, with an official address registered in the Merimée base. Although their state of conservation and accessibility are not detailed, their status as a historical monument makes it a point of interest for the study of industrial architecture and economic history of Réunion. Their integration into the local landscape also makes it a visual and cultural landmark for residents and visitors.
