Origin and history

The seigneurial barn of Cheripeau, located in Ampôche in the commune of Prée-d'Anjou (Mayenne), is an emblematic building of the late Middle Ages, built between the 4th quarter of the 15th century and the 1st quarter of the 16th century. This rectangular building, 30 metres long and 15 metres high, on three levels, includes a five-span barn served by a screw staircase. It has retained its original structure and has not undergone any major changes since its construction, making it an exceptional testimony to the rural architecture of that time.

The seigneurial barn is associated with a large building body of more than 40 meters long, former seigneurial house, located 500 meters from the Petit domaine. It was probably used for grain storage, reflecting the economic organization of the local seigneuries. The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 31 December 1987, stressing its heritage importance.

A similar building exists in Marigné-Peuton, instead of Le Plessis, suggesting a regional architectural tradition for this type of construction. The huisseries and fittings of the Cheripeau barn date back to the 16th century, reinforcing its historical authenticity. Today, it remains a rare and well preserved example of the seigneurial agricultural architecture of the late Middle Ages in the Pays de la Loire.
