Origin and history
The chivalry of the Discovery Mine Well, located in Decazeville, Aveyron, is an iconic industrial monument of the 1st quarter of the 20th century. This type of metal structure was used to extract coal from the depths, marking the height of mining activity in the region. Its functional architecture reflects the construction techniques of the time, adapted to the growing needs of the industry.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of December 17, 2019, the horse riding is now fully protected, including its precise delimitation on an annexed plan. Owned by Decazeville, it bears witness to the economic and social history of the region, where mining has shaped the landscape and local communities. Its location on the Lacaze road makes it a historical landmark in the mining basin.
The Occitanie region, and especially Aveyron, experienced strong mining activity in the early 20th century. Sequencings such as the Discovery symbolized the modernization of mining techniques, while reflecting the difficult working conditions of miners. These infrastructures, now missing or preserved as a heritage, recall the importance of coal in French industrialization.
