Origin and history
The Chevroton building is an iconic farm located in Gérardmer, in the historical region of Lorraine (Great East). Built in 1787, as evidenced by the date engraved on the key of the carriageway door, it represents the only rural house classified as historical monument of the Hautes-Vosges. Its facades, roofs, and some interior rooms (such as the old kitchen and a room with fireplace) were protected by decree in 1979, emphasizing its heritage importance.
The building is distinguished by its traditional materials: granite, stone, wood and shingles, typical of Vosges architecture. Its two-paned roof with covered gables and appentis reflects local construction techniques. Although private property, its location on the Place du Vieux Gérardmer, facing the church Saint-Barthélémy, makes it a central element of the historic landscape of the city.
The farm illustrates the rural life of the 18th and 16th centuries in the Vosges, where agriculture and livestock structure daily life. Buildings like this were used as both a dwelling, a place of work (stables, barns) and a symbol of prosperity for their owners. Their preservation offers a tangible testimony to pre-industrial lifestyles in Lorraine.
Ranked a historic monument in 1979, the Chevroton building enjoys protection over its exterior elements (facades, roofs) and interiors (kitchen, north room with fireplace). This official recognition highlights its role in Gérardmer's architectural and social history, while raising the question of its future tourist or cultural value.
