Origin and history
The Saint Marcellin church of Arthémonay is a Roman Catholic religious building built more than 900 years ago. It was consecrated by Pope Calixte II and belonged to the bishopric of Valencia, which donated it to the Benedictines of Montmajour in 1083. In 1297, the canons of Saint-Antoine recovered administration. Today the church preserves Romanesque elements such as the apse of the bedside, the southern apsidiole and the monumental bell tower.
The nave was rebuilt in the 19th century to accommodate more faithful. The church is mentioned in the Confessions of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and a mass anniversary was organized in 2019 to celebrate its 900 years. Joined historic monuments in 1926, it is attached to the parish of Notre-Dame des Collines de l'Herbass, part of the diocese of Valencia.
The church is located in the Drôme department, on the territory of the commune of Arthémonay, near the central town. It dominates the local landscape and remains an active place of worship, while being an architectural testimony of Romanesque art.
