Facades and roofs (Case AS 53): inscription by order of 2 July 1987
Origin and history
The Church of Our Lady of Lasseube, classified as a Historical Monument, finds its origins in an act of 1376 attesting to the existence of an earlier religious edifice. The present construction, dated the sixteenth century, is part of a pilgrimage context, being located on a secondary route leading to Compostela via Oloron. Its architecture is distinguished by a vast nave bordered by a northern collateral, opened by three broken arches and in cavets, while the spans are separated by full arches.
The bedside, with cut strips, and the two-bayed bell tower extended by a shelter, illustrate the stylistic features of the era. The south facade retains a 16th century portal, decorated with floral and vegetal motifs, once framing a statuette that is now extinct. This portal, protected by a porch, bears witness to the local craftsmanship and artistic influences of the Renaissance.
The church, whose facades and roofs have been inscribed since 1987, belongs to the municipality of Lasseube. Its location, near Place Amélie la Caze, and its role in the network of Compostela's roads underline its historical and cultural importance. The accuracy of its location, however, remains poor, with a score of 5/10 depending on available sources.
