Origin and history
Notre-Dame d'Aillas Church, located in the Gironde department in Aillas, is a Catholic religious building dating back to the 12th century. Originally, it belonged to the order of the Templars and had a typical Romanesque structure: a single nave, a transept surmounted by a bell tower at its cross, an apse and two apsidioles. This monument illustrates medieval religious architecture, marked by the simplicity and robustness of the buildings of the time.
In the 17th century, a south side was added to the building, but the most significant changes took place in the 19th and 20th centuries. This work includes the construction of the current bell tower, the restoration of the facade, the vaulting of the nave and the lower side, and the interior decoration. A north side was also built, while the south side was redesigned. These changes reflect the architectural changes and liturgical needs of the modern era.
In terms of heritage, the western façade of the church was classified as historical monuments by decree of 8 December 1896, recognizing its historical and artistic value. Later, the apse and apsidioles were registered by decree of November 3, 1925, and the whole building, with the exception of the already classified façade, was registered in full by decree of April 19, 2004. These successive protections underline the importance of this monument in the architectural and religious heritage of the Gironde.
