Origin and history
The Notre-Dame-des-Champs church of Mostuéjouls is a religious building whose construction spans two major periods: the 12th and 15th centuries. It is distinguished by an architecture typical of the Romanesque period, with a central nave flanked by low-sides, supported by four circular pillars. The continuous cradle covering the nave is countered by perpendicular cradles in the collaterals, a common technique in Romanesque churches.
On the outside, two types of foothills are visible: some, not very prominent, probably date back to the 12th century and had to bear outer arches, while others, more imposing, correspond to the doubles and seem to have been added later. The choir, finished with a three-sided wall, was modified in the 15th century with the addition of two funeral chapels pierced in the side walls of the bedside.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 22 September 1930, this church now belongs to the municipality of Mostuéjouls. Its architecture reflects stylistic changes between the Middle Ages and the end of this period, while illustrating local funeral and religious practices. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory, and it remains an important testimony of the religious heritage of Aveyron.
Located in the department of Aveyron, in the Occitan region, the church is part of a territory marked by a strong rural and religious history. The churches of that time served not only as places of worship, but also as gathering points for local communities, playing a central role in the social and spiritual life of the villages.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its architectural and historical importance. The building is listed in the Merimée base under the Insee 12160 code, confirming its anchoring in the Aveyron heritage and its protected status for almost a century.
